The church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints is amazing. My spiritual cup is filled when I go there.

While the community at large is one I have wonderful experience with. It's the reckless nature in which missionaries are sent into my local area where I have strong objections.
My family lives on respectable acreage in a rural wooded part of the county. While often quiet, houses in our area are prime targets for break-ins. Residents are weary of unknown cars and people as they more often than not are people up to no good. In addition, all the residents are armed and rightfully nervous about strangers. In addition to other people, there are misbehaved animals and the resident bear to contend with. It's safe to say we live in the sticks.
It's about 6pm in January on a cloudy night. There is not a scrap of moonlight to see by. I pull onto our long lonely street and notice two kids dressed in all black walking down the street. Based on their age and the white collars sticking up over their jackets, I figured they were missionaries. Not knowing how they got here and concerned for their safety, I immediately pull the car around to see if I can offer them a ride to their pickup point. They must have walked down somebody else's driveway because I could not find them.
I drive to the end of our street and notice an empty car next to our fence not far from our gate. In my 30 years of living here, an empty car at the end of this street is highly suspect. I check the car and see evidence that he care belongs to the church. Either that or the crooks have gotten smarter. I take some pictures of the car, and leave our gate open to see if the boys will walk up our driveway. In all the years I've lived here, we have not had a single trick or treater. Our driveway is 1/4 mile long gravel, unlit and winds out of view of the street and earshot. On a night like the one I described, this is ominous.
So the boy walk up the driveway and knock on the door. We exchange pleasantries and I show them I already have my Book of Mormon. This boys were respectful and very nice. We talk about what I thought of the book, etc. They told me they were both originally from Utah and based at the church on Overhulse Rd. I told them I was concerned for their safety and they should not be out here at night. They confidently said they were protected by god. I told them that the resident bear isn't going to think too much of that. The mention of the bear made them both perk up a bit. We talked bit more, I gave them some advice on how to avoid the bear and that I was concerned that they were sent out here, especially at night. All in all, good kids, trained well, doing the job they have been assigned.
Now to the reason for the 1-star. I understand people want to sell you something, be it vacuums, knives, religion, whatever. If an adult want to knock on doors in my neighborhood, go for it. It's their choice and the risk is theirs. What I take offense to is when an organization sends fully trusting, barely legal, suburban teens to an unknown, dark, rural location 3000 miles away and provide them with zero education as the people who reside there or the wildlife that can interfere. The organization takes zero risk and the kids take 100% of the risk. This is contemptible.
Finally, it was clear to me that these kids' only comfort was that they believed their god would keep them safe. There is something to be said about testing god's protection of yourself and another entirely about testing god's protection of another. Go ahead and believe whatever you want, go ahead and keep trying to peacefully sell it, but please be responsible with the people who do the work for you and please make better choices with these trusting individuals in the future.Added July 04, 2017 by Robbie Van Gorkom - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The people are great here. So many people are willing to help out. I feel good when I attend our meetings. I love it!

I look forward to coming to church here each week. It is a peaceful respite from the immorality of the world. The services are focused on the scriptures and how we can apply their teachings in our lives. The talks and lessons are given by lay members of the congregation who are not perfect but striving to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. A great place for anyone seeking greater spiritual fulfillment.
